Planning to see your orthodontist? Will this be a first-time visit? Are you nervous? Is the idea of checking in to the orthodontists office daunting for you? Most people will feel anxious; others, scared stiff. To be fair, it can be a bit intimidating. But there is nothing to be worried about.
If youre wondering what your first orthodontist visit would be like, here are a couple of things you can expect.
During your appointment, your orthodontist will ask you about your orthodontic and dental history. Perhaps he or she will want to see your oral health records. One of the assistants may also take X-rays of your jaw and mouth, which will be used in assessing your teeths alignment and bite pattern.
Part of the examination is the determination whether or not youre a good candidate for a particular orthodontic treatment. Your orthodontist will ascertain if braces or retainers are good options to address your bite or dental issues. Feel free to ask your orthodontist any question regarding these options.
For braces treatment, you can choose from metal, ceramic and clear aligners. Traditional metal braces are widely used for their reliability and durability. On the other hand, ceramic braces are todays preferred option since they are comfortable to wear. As for clear aligners, they are virtually invisible; it is as if youre not wearing them and people wont know you have them.
After the braces have come off, your orthodontist may require you to wear retainers for a couple of months. Its purpose is to hold your teeth in place and prevent them from shifting out of their ideal position. Unlike braces, retainers are removable from time to time.
Dont forget to ask your orthodontist how to take care of your prescribed orthodontic appliances. There may be food restrictions to maintain your braces or retainers in good condition.
