Get Started

Now that you have dental braces attached, all the more you need to take extra care of your teeth. Have your teeth checked by the dentist regularly. Keep up with your usual routine of brushing, flossing and rinsing with mouthwash. In addition, here are a couple of tips to keep your teeth and braces clean.

Brushing is elementary in dental care. Brush at least twice a day. Use fluoride toothpaste and rinse using mouthwash thereafter. But with dental braces on, brushing may involve some adjustments. First, you may find it easier to brush if you use a power toothbrush. True enough, you can't get rid of all the plaque by brushing alone; even more with braces on. Thus, you may need more dental toolsenter dental floss.

Even with braces on, you can clean your teeth by flossing every day. Doing this can be quite challenging since you have to work between and around the brace appliances. What's more, you need to be very careful so that they don't break. Ask your dentist how to floss with the braces on. This may involve special techniques, which may vary depending on the type of dental brace you are wearing.

An interdental brush can also be used to substitute for your regular toothbrush. This type of toothbrush can get between the brace wires and teeth, enabling it to get to those hard-to-reach spaces where plaque and food debris may be found. Ask your dentist about oral irrigators, as well.

For those wearing retainers, it is best to remove them as you brush your teeth. Brush the retainers as well. Also, regularly disinfect your retainers. Soak them in a denture cleanser at least once a week.
