Human teeth are categorized into four types depending on size, shape and function.

Incisors are located at the front of the mouth and are used for cutting food with their sharp edges. Adults have eight incisors, four in the upper jaw and four in the lower jaw.

Canines resemble the pointed fangs of dogs and are sharp and strong. There are two canines in each jaw and their primary purpose is to tear food.

Bicuspids, or premolars, are flat teeth whose central purpose is to grind and crush food. There are four bicuspids in each jaw.

Molars are located behind the bicuspids. They serve the purpose of an anvil with all the other teeth serving like hammers. There are 12 sets of molars, three sets in each jaw. The third molars are the last to come out and are normally called the wisdom teeth. They are normally not required for chewing and, because they cause the teeth to crowd, are typically extracted.
