Orthodontic Phasing

The likelihood of children developing tooth and jaw problems can sometimes be avoided. Some children may show signs of jaw or tooth problems at an early age. Parents can prevent their children from having deformed jaws and teeth as early as infancy by discouraging thumbsucking so that the teeth can grow in correctly. As early as 4 years old, a child may show indications that his/her teeth are not properly aligned.

In some cases, however, early intervention to correct the bite and straighten teeth may not suffice. In such circumstances, the orthodontist uses orthodontic appliances such as dental braces and dental retainers.

Correction of an irregular bite involves treatment covering several months and is carried out in two phases. Phase 1 is aimed at taking measures so that the teeth grow in correctly, and Phase 2 concerns corrective actions.
