How does diabetes affect the mouth?

Elevated sugar levels associated with diabetes will also be found in the saliva. This makes it easier for harmful bacteria to thrive in the mouth. This then makes you susceptible to oral infections such as periodontal (gum) disease, an infection of the gums and bone. In addition, diabetics have lower immune resistance, making the risk of infection even greater. Patients with undiagnosed diabetes may have dry mouth, which results in ulcers, infections and tooth decay. Smoking and poor oral hygiene will compound all of these problems.
