How long will it take before braces can be removed?

The time it will take for braces to achieve the desired results will depend on a number of factors, including the patient’s age, the type of braces used and the complexity of his/her dental problem. It will also depend on how closely the patient follows the treatment plan, whether he/she is faithful to the scheduled number of visits or follows instructions on proper tooth care.

Adults generally have a longer treatment period owing to the maturity of their teeth and jawbones. On average, however, orthodontic treatment using fixed braces lasts anywhere from nine to 30 months. After the braces are removed, patients will need to wear a retainer (a removable implement that keeps teeth from shifting to their previous positions) for a period of time to ensure that their teeth stay aligned. Retainers are worn every day for about six months and then only at night for a couple of years.
